Hungarian Fried Bread

Ingredients

  • 180 ml lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 250 g flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 28 g unsalted butter

Topping

  • 1/3 c vegetable oil
  • 3 crushed garlic
  • Salt as needed
  • Sour cream as needed
  • Grated cheese as needed can be mozzarella, cheddar, Swiss, or a mix
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  • Mix oil with garlic, cover with cling wrap, until ready to use
  • Soften yeast in water for 5-10 minutes, til bubbly
  • In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar, pour in bubbly yeast, knead
  • Knead in butter, then cover bowl with cling wrap, let rest for 30 mins
  • Meanwhile preheat cooking oil
  • Divide dough into 3-4 portions, stretch each and fry til golden brown
  • Brush with garlicky oil, sprinkle with salt, serve (this is how my youngest prefers his, whole the rest of us would have ours more rich with sour cream and grated cheese) immediately.
