My youngest son turned 3 on Christmas eve and it’s been 3 years now that we did not gift him with present(s) on the birthday but awesome cake(s) – because he is too young to understand tons of presents before and at Christmas, so cake it has always been (last year we made him 3D Angry Bird cake on a sling shot! Check the instructable on my list ^_^)
Just like last year, we again did not get to slice eat the complete cake as he did not allow us at all (today is December 28th, and the cake is still standing since December 24th LOL). Last year we sliced his Angry Bird cake and he shrieked and cried. He actually took off the cake from the sling shot and run around holding it, most likely thinking it was his stuffy toy.
This year, I made an extra cake, and we ate that extra cake as well, plain, no buttercream nor decoration though haha
My babes were amazed by the cake (I finished it at night while they were sleeping and woke them up early for a surprise). My youngest even cried in happiness, that until we added candles lol He was so eager for blowing out his candles….and til today, we always have to lid candles and sing, and he would blow out the candles….*face palm* hahahaha
The Structure
You will need one square OSB and a small rectangular OSB. The square one is the base and the rectangular one is for Spongebob body where the cakes are going to be stacked. The measurement is depending on you, but my cakes was @ 7 cm x 23 cm and the board was 9 cm x 35 cm. From the measurement you have, that’s how you will choose your steel floor flange, bolts, etc (shown on the picture).
I use the small rectangular OSB to mark down where I want the Spongebob to stand and then start securing the floor flange to the base board and to the small rectangular OSB. They need to be exactly perfect lined, otherwise you won’t have an equal flat cake.
Drill a hole as big as your dowel on the center on the body, cover the body with foil, then push in the dowel.
I need about 5 layers of cakes to build up a nice height of Spongebob.
If you are in Canada, you can find all equipment needed, shown on picture, at Rona!
Spongebob Legs
Now that your structure is done, let’s put make up on those galvanized metals 🙂
Roll two small fondant into ropes and roll flat them as shown on picture. Brush the fondant with some cream, then attach it to the “legs”
Roll another two small fondant into ropes, and with water, glue these ropes right on the bottom of the OSB body.
For the shoes, shape balls two small fondant and place them right in front of the legs, as shown
Roll another two ropes of fondant, roll flat and cut into two strips. Glue these stripes on the fondant balls and through the back of the legs.
Start painting them as Spongebob legs and shoes and socks colors are.
Obv. you can do all these in precolored fondant, but all I got was white fondant so I had to color them respectively. And instead coloring the fondant one by one, I find it easier to just paint than dyeing *lazy mom*
Cake and Cream
I have this cake brownie pan and find it easier to use rather than baking in a big pan, resulting in a big cake and then I have to cut it into portions of cakes (again, lazy mom), so that’s what I use *grins*
One recipe makes 3 cakes, and I baked twice to acquire 6 cakes (5 for Spongebob and the last one was the extra that we in the end had to eat without cream nor decorations lol)
2 1/2 c flour
2 c sugar
2 tsp Bsoda
a pinch or two salt
6 tbsp cocoa powder
1/2 c vegetable oil
1 tsp peppermint extract
1/2 tsp vanilla essence
2 tbsp vinegar
2 c water
In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking soda, salt and cocoa powder
In a separate bowl, mix oil, essence and extract, plus water
Pour oil mixture into flour mixture and add in vinegar
Mix to combine well
Pour batter into greased and lined with parchment paper baking pan, bake for 30-35 mins at preheated 350 F
Cool on rack
Chocolate Peppermint Buttercream
5 egg whites
1 1/4 c sugar
1 lbs unsalted butter
2-3 tbsp cocoa powder
1 – 1 1/2 tsp peppermint extract
In a double boiler, heat egg whites and sugar until 160 F, making sure water isn’t fully boiled, just simmer. Stirring occasionally.
Beat egg whites in low speed over a stand-up mixer, until cool to room temperature. Once egg white is room temperature, bring up speed to high until firm peak forms
Beat in butter a little at a time, keep beating until creamy
Once creamy beat in cocoa powder, followed with extract
Building Up Spongebob
Pipe some cream on a cake and stack. Each time, pipe some cream before stacking. Cover the whole cake with buttercream. Insert two big skewers on cakes for extra strengtheners. So you would have middle dowel plus two big skewers.
Roll flat a yellow fondant, about 18 inch in size (I use The Mat to roll my fondant and it has measurement, so 18 inch on all sides. This is enough to cover my overall cake, sides and front), and cover your cake.
You can either stack the cakes right away onto the OSB body (pushing through the dowel) or you can cover the cake first then lift it up and push it onto the dowel. Whichever you find it to be easier.
Roll more yellow fondant, enough to cover the back of Spongebob.
Start decorating as Spongebob (make indents for the sponge with ball tool or even spoon)
Roll flat white fondant and cut into two rounds for eyes, red fondant for mouth, pink fondant for tongue. Cut white fondant into small strips for teeth, blue fondant for eyes, black fondant for lashes, etc.
Now to make the hands (which later my 7 yo protested why Spongebob only has 3 fingers, I honestly didn’t know that he had 5 fingers like humans do hahaha). Roll two white fondants and two yellow ropes. Attach white and yellow with skewer and flatten the end of the yellow and shape into fingers.
For the nose, shape a yellow fondant into a somewhat rope and insert skewer.
Glue all fondant for eyes etc with a dab of water. While for hands and nose, push in the skewers into the cake
Voila, your stand-up Spongebob cake is done ^_^
Oh don’t forget for the pants area, either paint white fondant with brown food color or attach premade brown fondant. And also make red tie 🙂
