There is this restaurant called Red Saigon in Montreal, Canada and they have orange beef on their menu. We like getting it from them as they are the closest restaurant from our apartment, but they are often miss than hit :-/
So when am not too busy (read: lazy), I try to spare the time to prepare myself as my husband and I like to have Chinese food at least twice a week lol
This following orange beef is super simple, since am a practical (again, please read: lazy) cook!
- 600 g beef, slice into thin strips
- 2 egg whites
- 2-3 tbsp of cornstarch
- enough oil for frying
- salt
Sauce
- dried orange skin from 1 orange, chopped/sliced (or you can use fresh orange skins, grated)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup white vinegar
- 1/2 tbsp thick beef broth + 1/2 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp light soy sauce
- 2 tbsp corn starch
- a dash of salt and white ground pepper
- 1 small onion, slice
- Beat egg whites and pour into beef, mix
- Sprinkle cornstarch, mix well
- Heat oil to really hot and fry beef for 1-2 (until brown), drain
- Mix sugar, vinegar, beef broth, water, soy sauce, cornstarch, salt and white pepper until cornstarch dissolved
- Heat a little oil in nonstick pan, add in sliced onion and orange skins, stir
- Add in beef and mixture of cornstarch, keep stirring as everything will be sticky. Cook for 5 minutes longer, serve.
