Morning!
I’m fermenting cassava atm, which I so cannot wait until they are ready, but too bad I ran out of fresh ripe jackfruit. Would be nice to make Indonesian famous ice dessert called es teler. Ah well.
Speaking of fresh jackfruit. When my husband was in Vancouver, a main city in British Columbia, about 11 hours drive, he returned home with 3 slices of fresh jackfruit, YAY!
I grew up with jackfruit and I can eat them anytime. Living in Canada, they are only available in cans, which are soaked in sugary syrup, the original flavor is washed off. Occasionally, when you are lucky, the fresh ones can be found in big cities, but since we live in a small town, only when we are in Vancouver and/or Edmonton (9 hours drive), we can get them.
Jackfruit is another tropical fruit that the Indonesians believe can help avoid heart attack, healthy for the bone growth, great for those who are anemic, and can lower blood pressure.
When the fruit is not ripe yet, you can use it for meat substitute or in cooking. When it is ripe, you can eat them as is, they are pretty sweet, turn them into baking, pudding, smoothies, sweet drinks, and ice dessert.
To collect the fruits is pretty simple. You would need to lightly oiled your hands (otherwise it would be sticky) and just pull off the ripe fruits. To make it easier or if you don’t want oily hands, wear gloves! If needed, make a slice as shown on the picture below, but Do not discard the seeds!
Did you know you can also consume the seeds?
A couple of years back when I started living vegan and joined so many vegan groups, whenever people posted about jackfruit, I would inform them to not waste the seeds because they are edible as well (once boiled), which many questioned that as they never had them before haha. Today though, so many post about roasting the seeds.
That is new to me. I never roasted the seeds. In Indonesia we consumed them after boiling in salted water. So good as a snack in the afternoon, right in front of TV with a cuppa tea 😉
What about you? Did you ever eat jackfruit seed? How do you prepare them? Share some ideas 😉
