Another awesome Hungarian layer cake. Great for snack and/or dessert. Definitely perfect for your party’ dessert cart!
The 1st time I tried it was in 2007, I think?!
We visited my husband’s family, and his aunt made these along with Duna Hulam – which I also love, yum!
Cake Base
500 g flour
250 g butter
100 g icing sugar
3 yolks
1 dl white wine of your choice
Mix dry ingredients
Add in yolks and butter, work until mixture is crumbly
Pour in wine and knead
Wrap dough with cling wrap and chill in the fridge for 2 h
Meanwhile, prepare the other layers
Apple Layer
800 g green apples (tart but sweet)
2 tbsp honey
1 lime, juiced and grated the skin
enough ground cloves and cinnamon powder (to taste)
Skin and grate apple, then mix with the rest of the ingredients
Poppy Seeds Layer
200 g poppy seeds, ground until fine
100 g sugar
50 g raisins
1 dl white wine of your choice
Mix everything in a pot, heat over low-medium heat until thickened (sugar dissolved)
Cool to room temperature
Walnut Layer
200 g ground walnut
100 g sugar
50 g raisins
1 dl white wine of your choice
Mix everything in a pot and heat over low-medium heat til thickened
Cool to room temperature
Flodni
Divide dough into 4 portions, roll flat each of them
Place one layer as bottom, spread walnut filling, top with another layer of dough, spread poppy seeds layer, then top again with another dough, spread with apple layer and top with the last dough
Brush top dough with an egg wash and bake at 170 C for 60-65 minutes
Just before slicing, sprinkle top with generous icing sugar
