Hi Friends! It’s lazy Saturday for us today. Boys woke up closer to half past 9 this morning, wowzer. They did not go to bed late, so it was surprising that they would sleep in that long hahahaha Today I would like to share this dish from Hungary, that is sweet, yet it is mainly served for either lunch or dinner, but of course whenever we dined out, you can order it for anytime. It is called Makos Nudli, literally translated as poppy seeds dumpling.
The dumpling itself do not contain poppy seeds as an ingredient, but rather that the dumplings are covered with poppy seeds. Again, this is a sweet dish, but for lunch or dinner, so it’s very interesting needless to say 😀 While the following uses gnocchi as the dumplings, the Hungarians would use any kinds of homemade or store bought dumplings and also noodle/pasta. Most of the time at restaurants, they are served topped with jam or fruity sauce. And them Hungarians really love poppy seeds, so most of the time you would find them super covered in poppy seeds, like super generously coated. Here is base recipe should you like to give a try!
- cooked dumpling (mine is gnocchi, potato dumplings) – I prepared them by boiling in salted water
- icing sugar, depending how sweet you’d like your dish to be, but seriously, the Hungarians serve them SWEET!
- ground poppy seeds, as generous as you’d like (the boys don’t like them much, they find them to be bitter regardless the icing sugar, so I do not coat ours with too much poppy seeds whenever I prepare them)
- Mix dumplings with enough icing sugar and ground poppy seeds, serve immediately
