In Indonesia, klepon is to be believed Java island origin, however, if you go to Bali island, they also have klepon. Exact cake, with slightly differ shape. While throughout Indonesia, the klepon is round or ball shape, Balinese klepon is not really round.
The Indonesian descendants in Netherlands introduced this cake to the Dutch, and the Dutch would also refer it as klepon.
Indonesians who speak Malay and Malaysians know klepon as ondeh-ondeh, which is not to confuse with onde-onde (sesame balls). Malaysians would also refer theirs as buah Melaka.
In Thailand, their klepon is called Khanom Tom and often colorful, not just of green Pandan color and flavor.
Do you have similar cake coconut balls where you are from? Klepon is made of glutinous rice flour, flavored and colored with Pandan, filled with gula Jawa/gula merah (Indonesian palm sugar), boiled and then rolled in grated coconut 🙂
