Hi Peeps!
Have you heard Rendang? The world known Indonesian beef stew. It is my husband’s most favorite Indonesian dish. I think he married me due to Rendang and Durian ?
Well, today am sharing Javanese style Rendang, so it is sweet and a tad spicy. Original Rendang is from Sumatra and it is always on the spicy side, but the Javanese version tends to be not spicy but sweet. I explained it on the video too ?
Here are the ingredients should you want to try as well ?
- 1.3 kg round roast
- 1 small onion
- 4 garlic
- 3-4 candlenut
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika powder
- 1/2 tsp ground coriander
- 1/8 – 1 tsp cayenne powder
- 3 dries bird eye chilies (fresh are fine as well)
- 1 lemongrass
- 1 thumb ginger
- 2 daun salam (Indonesian bay leaf)
- 2 kafir lime leaf
- 1/8 tsp galangal powder
- 1/2 – 1 tbsp Vegeta powder
- 1 tbsp mushroom granules
- 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
- 3 1/2 c water
- 1 can coconut milk
- 2-3 tbsp sweet soy sauce
Phewwww tons of ingredients, hey ? But end result, brings happiness to my hubby’s tummy, it’s all good ?

Rendang Jawa
Ingredients
- 1.3 kg round roast
- 1 small onion
- 4 garlic

- 1/8 – 1 tsp cayenne powder
- 3 dries bird eye chilies fresh are fine as well
- 2 tbsp oil
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 lemongrass
- 1 thumb ginger
- 2 daun salam Indonesian bay leaf
- 2 kafir lime leaf
- 1/8 tsp galangal powder
- 1/2 – 1 tbsp Vegeta powder
- 1 tbsp mushroom granules
- 1/2 tbsp brown sugar
- 3 1/2 c water
- 1 can coconut milk
- 2-3 tbsp sweet soy sauce
Instructions
- Cut cubes beef, set aside
- Place onion, garlic, candlenut, bird eye chilies, oil in food processor. Process until fine, mix with turmeric powder, paprika powder, ground coriander, cayenne powder.
- Heat oil, saute paste along with ginger (bruised), lemongrass (bruised), salam and kafir lime leaves, and galangal powder
- Add in beef cubes, stir to coat with with paste
- Add in 3 1/2 c water
- Boil beef until water very low (much gone)
- Season with Vegeta powder, mushroom granules, brown sugar, sweet soy sauce
- Add in coconut milk
- Simmer for an H (til thickened gravy produced)
