I had a little feast for myself the other day, a plate of warm rice, steamed banana blossom, fried tofu and tons of peanut sauce.
Sound so simple, right? But it’s a huge deal to me, keep reading ๐
Growing up in Indonesia, banana blossom is very easy to find, be it from your own backyard, from the traditional market, or even at supermarket. Here in Canada, I could find them once awhile in Chinatown, but obviously, Chinatown mostly exists in big cities, or where the cities/towns have tons of (SE or E) Asian immigrants.
Where we live currently, there are plenty Asians, but from the South (India and/Pakistan), I have never seen a banana blossom here, sadly. We do have one Filipino store, they do have banana blossom occasionally, but in brine, canned, which is very different in flavor and texture.
One day my husband returned from Vancouver and inside his “luggage” – he didn’t have any but boxes of grocery ๐๐๐๐, was two fresh banana blossoms!!!
Can you imagine my happiness? Been living in current city (of only 20k) for almost 6 years, and now I get to have banana blossom? ๐ Party it is! ๐
So I steamed one and freeze the other one. I had it the way I would have it in Indonesia, just warm rice and plenty of peanut sauce, yummo!
This following blog is more to sharing the recipe for the fatless peanut sauce actually.
I love peanut sauce, for salad, for grilled tofu/tempe, etc. But obviously, peanut is high on fat and calories, as you may already know, and I am fat already, shouldn’t add more pounds ๐
One day while shopping at Costco, I spotted fatless peanut butter powder, known as PB2. I was so excited to try that my husband grabbed 3 jars! Say whaaa…..t???!!Who can eat so much, I thought. But turns out I can. I make peanut butter spread, add it to my dishes, dessert, buns, and of course turn it into peanut sauce, which I will be sharing now.
It’s pretty good, less hassles, I can have peanut sauce often, and I don’t feel guilty as much ๐
You can definitely adjust the sweetness, stronger garlic flavor, or a tad more spiciness, to your liking ๐
