I have a recipe for making Indonesian meatless meatballs called cilok, but this time instead just flour and seasoning, like the original cilok would be, I used tempeh (fermented beans) as one of the main ingredients.
Cilok is usually sold at street food vendors, they are pretty good. Depending on the vendors, they would add beef in their ingredient too, but normally not really, as then they would be called “bakso”, the real meatballs 😛 Cilok usually served with sweet/thick soy sauce mixed with Indonesian style ketchup, and sometimes with hot sauce.
There are too many varieties out there from province to province, even from town to town. However, for now, my tempeh cilok is served peanut sauce, because I loooovvvveeeee peanut sauce too much 😀
I made my own tempeh, but you can use store bought for easier.Let’s see the recipe 😀
- 1 bag of tempeh, steam for 5 mins, then mash
- 6 tbsp flour
- 8 tbsp tapioca starch
- 1 tbsp onion powder
- 1/2 tbsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp Vegeta powder of mushroom powder (if not from health store, get it from Amazon, OR you can powdered dry shiitake mushrooms yourself)
- 2 1/3 hot boiling water
- Mix all ingredients then pour in hot water, 1/3 c at a time, knead
- Bring 2 L water to boil
- Shape dough into balls and drop them into water
- Boil until balls are floating
- Serve with your favorite sauce or dipping!
Thanks for looking 😀
