There is a rainbow themed contest on instructables.com that I would like to enter and so I baked this challah.
Challah is a braided Jewish bread by the way 🙂
Yeast Mixture:
1 1/4 c lukewarm water
4 tsp active dry yeast
1 tsp sugar
Sprinkle water with sugar followed with yeast and let bloom for 10 mins, stir
Dough:
In a large bowl, pour 1/4 c cooking oil, 1/4 – 1/3 c sugar (depending how sweet you’d like your loaf to be), a tsp of salt, and 4 eggs, stir to combine
Add in 4 c of flour, stir
Pour in yeast mixture and add in another 1 c of flour, knead
Let dough stand to rise in warm place for about 45 mins
Once dough has risen, punch down and slice into 5 portions
Color per dough with one food color (gel food color only please). I use red, blue, orange, green and purple. The depth of the color is depending how you like it to be. Can be pastel or darker color.
Once dough are colored, let them rise again in warm place for 20-25 mins
After 20-25 mins resting, roll each dough into ropes (as you can see my ropes are bumpy, to avoid that, cover dough before letting it rise and once risen, knead – if you aren’t as lazy as me tho :))
Braid ropes and place it into a loaf pan (or you can just use regular baking sheet!)
Brush with an egg diluted in a little water, and sprinkle with poppy seeds (or not, as you wish)
Bake bread in preheated 350 F for 30-35 mins (should sound hollow when tap with a knife or finger)
My challah becomes so huge, next time I will have to use bigger loaf pan 😛
With similar recipe, I also made rainbow bagels, which I will be sharing the recipe too but on a separate post 😀
