The buns themselves, they taste milky good; and with the buttery apple filling, these buns are ah-ma-zing.
It’s Spring here in Hungary, lovely flowers in the garden, and these steamed buns for after lunch were just nice as we had them outside in the backyard with the wonderful scenery 😀
Dough:
1 1/4 c milk (no skim nor 1% milk please. I’d go for 3% or 2.8% at least)
1/4 c sugar
1 heaping tsp instant yeast
4 c flour
Heat milk to lukewarm, stir in sugar, let stand for a for 30 seconds then stir in yeast. Let stand until yeast is softening
Add in flour one cup at a time, knead. Cover and let stand until doubled in size, in warm area
Meanwhile, make the filling
Filling
2 apples, as long as they are sweet
2-3 tbsp sugar
lime juice of 1/2 lime
1 generous tbsp butter
2 tsp of cornstarch diluted in a little milk
Skin and slice apples into small thin quarters. Place apples in a pot, turn on heat low-medium. Add in butter, stir until melted and apples starting to soften. Stir in sugar until melted. Cook until you feel the apples are soften enough (depending whether you want them to be a bit crunchy or totally soften).
Pour in cornstarch mixture, stir quickly, to thicken. Take off from heat and let cool to room temperature.
Making Buns:
Divide dough into 8 balls. Flatten each with your hands and fill center with 1 generous apple filling, seam to seal
Steam buns and enjoy 🙂
